At least six Palestinians killed by Israeli fire in Gaza
Gaza City: At least six Palestinians have been killed and more than 40 injured by Israeli fire following an overnight attack and continued fighting in northern Gaza on Wednesday, Palestinian security officials and witnesses said.
According to the BBC the Israeli attack was targeted at a group of armed men planting a mine, including a gunman who approached troops.
The Israeli military confirmed there was “ground action” in northern Gaza, including three air strikes. “The operation is directed against rocket launching infrastructure,” a military spokesman said.
More than 40 people have been injured by air strikes, tank shelling and fierce fighting as Israeli troops clash with militants near the town of Beit Hanun.
Witnesses said numerous armoured vehicles had gathered at Israel's border with southern Gaza late on Tuesday.
Hamas claimed its gunmen killed an Israeli soldier and injured others when they attacked Israeli vehicles with anti-tank rockets.
The last major Gaza offensive launched by Israel was after Palestinian gunmen captured an Israeli soldier in a cross-border raid on June 25.
The armed wing of the ruling Hamas party said the operation would have a “negative influence” on Egypt’s attempt at brokering a prisoner swap.
Earlier Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's security cabinet called a meeting to discuss widening the Gaza offensive.
